The title is a play on sounding German and means "What in the Heck". Musically speaking, this piece was composed using Finale software, controlling my Ensoniq EPS via MIDI cables. I had sampled 8 short sounds that I made with my mouth. In this piece I used 5 of them: sustained voice (singing); humming while whistling; vocalizing while breathing in; breathing in; and sustained z sound. For each of these samples I used the EPS to loop the end of the sound so it could be sustained indefinitely. For each of these sounds I created an instrument in the EPS that contained 4 different "patches" and "pressure" that are manipulations of the original sample. The EPS has a pitch wheel and a mod wheel. I made use of the mod wheel to also alter parameters that are applied to the sounds (low frequency oscillator, frequency modulation, position of the loop, etc.) I made use of these as well as of the patches by programming Finale to send MIDI requests to the EPS. I discovered that these instruments would produce a wide variety of sound-effects depending upon the pitch and pressure, as well as the mod wheel. And, I created graphics in Finale to manipulate MIDI data over time.
