  • This brief overture for string quartet was written as my first major assignment for a course (which, at the time of writing, I'm still taking) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I've dedicated this work to the string quartet who will be premiering it at an informal reading in a few weeks from now. Hopefully they enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
  • So the title, "Overture"—what is this an overture to? Is there some story behind this piece; is there maybe a play that this is an overture for? That I'm not too sure of still. The overture does follow a sort of story-like structure, starting with an introduction which brings in the central motif of the first theme, leading into an A theme and playing around with that, then a B theme and playing with that and the A theme before returning to the introduction with a new triumphant ending. But even with that structure I don't have exactly one story which fits the bill. So, in lieu of picking just one story as a companion to this work, I invite the performers to interpret the overture as they will, crafting their own story to show to the audience.
