History

Vienna-based music publisher. Founded by Johann Ludwig Maisch, who had worked as a bookkeeper at the Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir between 1802-1808. In the latter year, he took over from Thomas Anton Kozeluch's widow Anna, who had been running the Musikalisches Magazin set up by Leopold Kozeluch.
The firm continued in Maisch's name after his death until April 1818, when his widow Anna Maria Carolina sold to Johann Daniel Sprenger (1794-1819). After Sprenger's early death, the firm was continued under his name by his widow Karoline (née Gsangler), who married Mathias Artaria (d.1835) in 1821. They ran the firm together until M. Artaria's death, and in 1837 Karoline renamed the firm Mathias Artarias sel. Witwe und Comp., and continued publishing into the early 1850s.
