History
Gustav Brauns of Leipzig was mainly a bookselling business. It started in 1844 when Gustav Brauns bought J.C. Thiele's bookstore. Its main store was in an elegant 18th century building name the Silver Bear. This building had been frequented by Goethe in his student days (1760s); it was demolished in the 1890s.
Publishing was a sideline. It published musical scores from 1844 to 1850 and then occasionally until 1873. Many of the works were by Herrmann Hirschbach (1812–1888), such as his cycle of four string quartets entitled Lebensbilder (life pictures), and there were also a few piano works by Louis Kohler.
