According to Paul Sparks (The Classical Mandolin) : Three people - Luigi Embergher, Giovanni De Santis, and Giovanni Battista Maldura - are credited for refining and redesigning the classical Roman mandolin to the point where it eventually became the preferred instrument of many famous concert performers. Maldura was a leading mandolinist in Rome who, working together with the luthier De Santis, evolved the basic design of this new instrument in the late 1880s or early 1890s (although his application for a patent for the design of the curved mandolin bridge was not filed until 1896).
