Per Augener edition: 'A Christmas Gift to Johannes Brahms'. British Library catalogue has accession date of 1879 so presumably composed 1878 or earlier.
Notes: SBB also has a scan (PPN 737672196) though their scan has plate 339 (maybe originally published by someone else?). The publication by Augener appears twice at least in HMB before 1901 (Hofmeister's Monatsbericht (1878), p.297, and Hofmeister's Monatsbericht (1880), p.226). Apparently a third time as above, to account for the much later plate (as 1878 would have plate 6221.)
