This page explains how to deal with some special cases in the score submission process.
Submission of Parts
- Please submit all parts to the page of that particular piece, i.e. do not submit parts to a separate page.
- If a page for that piece does not exist, please create one for that piece itself (i.e. do not specify "parts" in the page title).
Submission of Incomplete Pieces (Movements from a Work)
- Please submit them to the page of the entire piece, i.e. do not create a separate page for each movement.
- If a page for that piece does not exist, please create one for that piece itself (i.e. do not specify movement in page title).
- For all IMSLP purposes, sections of an opera will be treated like movements of a work.
Submission of Incomplete Piece Sets (Works from a Set)
- If the work is short (for example, an one page work) or usually part of a collection (for example, Tchaikovsky's Seasons), please submit the work to the page of the entire work set, i.e. do not create a separate page for each separate work within the set.
- If the work is long (for example, one of the six Beethoven String Quartets Op.18), please submit it to a separate page.
- When in doubt, put the work as part of a collection (#1), and contact staff (see bottom of page).
- If a page for the entire work set, or a separate page for any work in the set already exists, please follow suit.
Submission of a Replacement or a Different Edition
- Please clarify in the comments box on the submission page if the submission is intended to completely replace an earlier version (i.e. same edition, much better scanning quality); the default assumption will be a different edition. If it is a different edition, you can also comment on whether the scanning quality is better or worse than previous submissions, but this is optional.
Submission of a Transcription, Arrangement, or Reorchestration
- In most cases, submit such works to the work page of the original work. For example, the arrangement of the piano quintet by Brahms is on the very same page as the original. Only if the work page gets too long, separation of the work pages is possible.
- In most cases, submit such works to the work page of the original composer. For example, Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition should be submitted to the work page of Mussorgsky's original work, and not a separate page. In some cases, where the arranger is well known, it is permissible to submit the work to work pages of both the arranger and the original composer (ex. the Liszt transcriptions), if desired. However, submission of the work to a work page of the original composer (whether or not it has already been submitted elsewhere) is for all practical purposes mandatory.
- Please indicate that the file is not the original work in the "File description" field. Make subheadings to clearly separate the original work.
Submission of a Collection
- If the individual pieces within the collection are significant in length (approx. more than 5 pages on average), the pieces should be broken apart and submitted to the corresponding work page of the composer.
- Otherwise, if the individual pieces are short, they should be submitted to a work page under the category of the collector/editor. Alternatively, when all pieces are by the same composer, they can be submitted to a work page under category of the composer. When the collector is unknown, they should be submitted under the category Various, or, if applicable, Traditional / Folk Songs categories.

- The contents should be listed under "Number of Movements" using Template:LinkCompS and Template:LinkWorkN
- Template:ColCat should be used the list the collection additionally under the respective composer
- On the work pages of each individual work, the collection can be linked to using Template:Crossref
Entering special publisher information
The standard format for citing publications on IMSLP is, without the brackets:
- Original title, Series or Collection title (Italic).
- <Place (city)>: <Publisher>, Ed. or No.<Publisher's catalog number>, <Date>. Plate <Plate number>.
- Place (city)
- The principal place of business, the headquarters or 'home office'. Some publishers did issue items directly from a branch office, but this is fairly rare.
- Ideally, the publisher's imprint (name) at the time the actual engraving being posted was first published. Later printings by the same publisher or a legal successor are called reissues. Many Breitkopf works originally published in Leipzig were later reissued in Wiesbaden after WW II, for example. If possible, link to the publisher's page on IMSLP (find publishers here).
- Publisher's catalog number
- Many publishers had a separate catalog or edition number for a title than the plate number. Use plate number if plate and catalog number are the same (Universal Edition, for example).
- Use the date of first publication of the engraving being posted, if known. Most European publishers started putting dates on their scores only after a series of treaties with the USA were ratified in 1891, though there are several publishers who placed a date on the title page (Simrock and Belaieff) before then. Reissue dates should not appear in the first line, but only in the second line of the citation (see below). If no date can be found, use the abbreviation "n.d." followed by an estimated date in parens. (See publisher pages for plate number charts for help in date estimation). The supplemental field "|Reprint=" should be used when possible, especially when the reprint is of a well-known reprint house like Dover or Kalmus. Avoid including copyright renewal dates unless the original date of publication is 1923 or later.
- Plate number
- Reproduce the plate number, including the letter prefixes or suffixes, except in cases where the prefix and suffix are engraver designations (Ricordi) or the suffix is merely an indication of the number of pages (Carl Fischer and other US publishers sometimes use this system - though there are exceptions).
- Unknown data: leave blank
- Estimated or supposed information: Put this between [square brackets].
- Part of a series (e.g. complete works edition)
- Enter the complete series name, volume number and volume title. For some editions, special pages exist - make a link in the reference! You will find them here.
- Enter the original publisher first. Make a line break with <br>, and enter the reissue publisher on a new line, preceded by "Reissue -". The supplemental field "|Reprint=" should be used when possible, especially when the reprint is of a well-known reprint house like Dover or Kalmus.
