Misc. Comments

For the Third Sunday in Lent, most likely.

Commentary on the movements

  1. Aria: Widerstehe doch der Sünde. The cantata opens with a V7 over a tonic pedal, a harshly dissonant and beautiful effect. Some, notably Sir George Grove2 thought this a brilliant and unique idea, but several other Bach cantatas, including BWV 611 use the same cord. Here, the harmonic daring which pervades the movement represents the superficial attractiveness of sin.
  2. Recitativo: Die Art verruchter Sünden. A "boldly descriptive"1 secco recitative.
  3. [Aria]: Wer Sünde tut, der ist vom Teufel. A fugue in 4-part texture, with the upper strings in unison by family. This is the most lively and fastest of the movements, illustrating the notion that there are ample rewards for resisting the temptations of sin.
