Size of files

Hi Feldmahler, I need to upload some files over 100 mb (I have one that is ca 200 mb). Is that possible with the current size-restriction (if there is any)? --Funper talk 08:38, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

Unfortunately that is not possible with the current size restriction... can you point me to which file this is (I'm assuming it is part of the new Liszt project)? I'll see if there is any way to either re-compress the file without sacrificing quality, or break the file into parts. In the worst case I can raise the size restriction, but it won't be easy... --Feldmahler 11:20, 31 August 2007 (EDT)
I may be able to help in this area. Using the professional version of Acrobat you can take advantage of a file reduction feature that uses in-house lossless compression for the existing document making it compatible with version 7 or above, nothing lower. Sometimes, depending on who and how the file was created, this reduction in size can be quite substantial. Daphnis 23:02, 31 August 2007 (EDT)
It is "Années De Pèlerinage, 1ère Année" (in the list) but there are some more files that are over 100 mb. If there is any way to recompress it using Acrobat Pro (or anything else) feel free to tell, I have version 8,0. --Funper talk 15:22, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
Wait, are you creating a new PDF from individual files with Acrobat 8.0 pro? If so, check the version compatibility by looking at document properties. Going to 'File' ->'Reduce file size' will set compression only readable with later versions. If it's already set to Acrobat 8 compatibility, then you should change the import compression in your preferences and set it to use JBIG2 (lossy). Daphnis 16:16, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

Remove unused/unreferenced files from IMSLP

In addition to my current Debussy renovation (which includes finishing his entire works list over the next month or so) I'm also simultaneously working on a Honegger collection project and I've noticed some files were recently uploaded from the MIT archive. Since these files aren't very good at all and since I have the sheet music myself, I plan on making all new nice-quality scans for the existing pieces. My question is how do I indicate the old files to be deleted since I can see no point whatsoever for having 2 files of the exact same work/edition but one that wouldn't be useful and not on the page for the work. Daphnis 23:06, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

I think that if you go to the image page for the file in question and click upload a new version of this file and name the new file exactly the same as the old one, the old file will just be overwritten. I've done this when Carolus has me edit out copyrighted logos for pieces that have been uploaded & it seemed to work fine, but there might be a better way also.Mcroskell 00:23, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
Mcroskell is right about overwriting when the file itself is processed in some way (lock removed, logo removed, etc). But for completely different scans, even if of the same edition, I think it may be better to just submit it again, so that you can get another IMSLP catalog number. This is because I don't want the file under an IMSLP number to change too dramatically, or else I'm afraid that the IMSLP index number would lose its meaning sooner or later. Plus, you'd have to edit the page anyway, since the uploader has changed :)
Also, I just created this template, which you can put in the "Misc. Notes" section of any file you want removed :) --Feldmahler 14:37, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
Ok, I guess I'll submit all new files. Although I don't see the point in having two files representing the exact same edition when one is clearly inferior quality and thus when given the choice of the two I don't see who would choose the crappy one over the clearer one. Daphnis 16:23, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
Oh, I wasn't saying that we should keep the old file; just that it can be deleted separately :) Plus this would be the same anyway since either way you will have to edit the page after upload (unless you don't want the old file deleted). --Feldmahler 16:47, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

So case in point: http://www.imslp.org/wiki/Caprice_Arabe%2C_Op.96_%28Saint-Sa%C3%ABns%2C_Camille%29#.7B.7B.23imslpmsg:misccomments.7D.7D Do I just add that new template to the misc. notes section of the old file? Daphnis 16:57, 1 September 2007 (EDT)

Actually, I moved the template to another name to make it clear: Template:Filereplaced. And yes you add it to the "misc. notes" section of the old file :) About deleting, let me think a bit more about how to set the guidelines for this. I say this because I both don't want anyone to inadvertently abuse it, and also don't want too much additional burden on the admins (for checking the scores). In addition, so far IMSLP's removal policy has been purely copyright based, and so this would become the first extension of the policy.
The example you gave is very straightforward, but others may not be... but at least after you put the template on the page we can remove it anytime we want :) --Feldmahler 21:36, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
I added your new template to a couple files/page. Do you get a notification when such a template has been used? Are you able to tell to which ones the template has been added? Daphnis 00:15, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Weird copyright tags + favicon

Hey there! I saw that some pages have weird copyright status tags, such as Mignonettes (Hofmann, Józef) (which, although all scores belong to the public domain in all countries, since they were published in 1923, it says that they only belong in the US, not in EU or Canada), and Batalha de 6º Tom (Correa, António) (which gives exactly the same message). Any idea why this would be happening? ~ jujimufu 08:09, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Actually, the auto-tagger is correct in the first case if Hofmann wasn't a US citizen. But apparently he was, so the auto-tagger is wrong (but then again the auto-tagger doesn't know that ;)). You can just override the auto-tagger on the work-page level (see IMSLP:Workpage Auto-tagger).
In the second case, the auto-tagger had no death date to go by, so it assumes that the composer is alive. In such cases you can use "|Birth Date=" and "|Death Date=" to override the autotagger. I've already fixed up the page, and the tag should go away in a few days :) --Feldmahler 12:37, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

I don't want to fill up your talk page with many different subjects, so I'll just continue here :P

I just had an epiphany about our favicon. I thought that, instead of drawing one ugly treble cleff on mspaint (like I did back then), I could just give a simple instruction to lilypond to create a treble clef and a 4/4 time signature, and maybe just move the time signature a bit to the left so that it all fits in a square, then this would definitely look better than the current one. I've made a small image like this which you can find here: Image:Treble_clef.png. We could also put some flats or sharps to make it look more full, because I think that this clef is a bit smaller than the current one, and less visible too (but it is more subtle and fine than the current one). So, what do you think? :P ~ jujimufu 08:32, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Now that is one cute looking icon ;) I'd fill up the space between the treble clef and the time signature with a sharp (a flat would collide with the time signature). And then I'll put it on the site :)
Nice idea! --Feldmahler 12:37, 3 September 2007 (EDT)
P.S. Great job on the FAQs! --Feldmahler 12:43, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Pasternak

Hi, The two small piano pieces were not published until 1975 - even though they were composed some 70 years before. (The same is true for all of the remainder of Pasternak's small musical output.) They are therefore not PD in the US - or anywhere else. Is there a particular procedure to use in deleting works resident on the USA server, or is that something best left to you? Carolus 17:29, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Actually... I put the two Pasternak pieces to rest a few days ago... ;) all that remains is to delete the work page. Generally the incidences of copyrighted material on the US server should be very rare, as the publishing history should have been known in order for it to be on the US server. However, if this happens again, just ring me up on this talk page :) --Feldmahler 18:55, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Bowen Pieces

Hey Feldmahler, just thought I'd give you a heads up about a couple of the Bowen pieces I posted. I didn't realize it to after I'd posted and uploaded them to the U.S. server, but the pieces "Barcarolle" & "Humoresque" are just mvts. from the Suite for Violin & Piano which I also posted. I don't know why Sibley put them up seperately, which is what threw me off. Anyway, since they also come from the same edition, there is no need to move them to the Suite for Violin & Piano Page, rather the article page for both works can just be deleted and they can also be deleted off the U.S. server. Sorry for the confusion.Mcroskell 19:05, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

No problem :) I'll delete them right away. --Feldmahler 19:13, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Greek menu translations

Heya there! :D

I just wanted to tell you that there are some things that haven't been translated.

For example, "sister sites" should translate to "συνεργασίες" (it actually translates to "συνεταιρικές ιστοσελίδες", but it's too long. You can put the second one, though, if you want; it's more accurate as a translation) and "permanent link" (very bottom) should translate to "Σταθερός σύνδεσμος".

Those, as far as the plaintext. Concerning the links, the text linking to the FAQ (Συνήθεις ερωτήσεις (FAQ) should link to IMSLP:Συνήθεις Ερωτήσεις instead of IMSLP:FAQs, the text linking to the sitemap (Χάρτης Ιστοσελίδας) should link to IMSLP:Χάρτης Ιστοσελίδας instead of IMSLP:Sitemap, and lastly, the text linking to the site support (Υποστήριξη ιστοχώρου) should link to IMSLP:Υποστήριξη Ιστοσελίδας instead of IMSLP:Site support.

I will add them shortly :)
Ok, great :)

That should do the whole thing.

Also, I was thinking about the IFLANG construct, and some times I want to see the English translation of a page, but it is too much trouble to go to my preferences, change my language settings, get back to the page, see what I want to see and then change my language back to Greek. Thus, I started thinking that maybe there is a dynamic way to tell the server the preferred language, much like adding &action=purge to the URL in order to clear the cache. If there is such a way to give the site the preferred language, we could have a top bar with links for the various languages of that page (just like Public domain), but instead of linking to different pages, the links will link to the same page but with a different suffix in the url.

There should be something to do this (the uselang parameter in normal Mediawikis), but apparently it was broken after my auto-language selector modification... it'd be great if you can open a forum thread about this so that I don't forget :)
Ok, will do boss :)

Lastly, I just wanted to ask about the status of the greek translations of the Add File, Add Work and Add Composer texts. As soon as I finish translating a couple more pages, these will be the only thing that'll be keeping IMSLP from being totally translated into Greek! Sorry for bugging you with this over and over, but it's just that I am excited :P

Take care! ~ jujimufu 02:27, 5 September 2007 (EDT)

I've already updated the translations of all special pages in the current experimental code; they will be released along with the rest of IMSLP v0.3 in a few days :) --Feldmahler 11:12, 7 September 2007 (EDT)
Ok, tons of thanks! :D Can't wait to see them in action :P Take care! :D ~ jujimufu 18:45, 7 September 2007 (EDT)

Some more on the translations.

Firstly, the Greek translation to "Recordings:" is "Ηχογραφήσεις:", if you have some time to add it (it looks quite ugly to have all the field translated except for one :P).

Secondly, I was wondering how I could translate all the {{#imslpmsg:}} templates. I mean, the texts have to be somewhere, right? But I can't seem to be able to find them. Specifically, I want the Text-MusicFiles, Text-GeneralInformation, Text-MiscallaneousComments and AddFile templates, so that I can translate those last bits of IMSLP into Greek (I also have some project pages to translate with iflang, and the FAQ, and I will do those shortly :P).

I'm currently focusing on upgrading the wiki to 1.11 (which is a surprisingly lot of work mainly because of the many changes I made to the code), so this may have to wait a bit, unfortunately :/ For the second question, I actually got your translation of it on the translation page, but I didn't add it because as I said in the forum thread the translation mechanism is currently rather broken, and I'd rather add it after I fix the mechanism itself (which would again have to wait until after 1.11...). :/ --Feldmahler 20:07, 13 September 2007 (EDT)
Hm.. I see. Well, then, I'll have to wait until 1.11 :P It's ok, though, I have all the time in the world :D

Oh, and I'd also like to bring to your attention two discussions: Category_talk:Composers (the second subject)

and an idea about the Recording field in work pages: IMSLP_talk:Piano_Society

Thanks a ton for everything, I will be working on the translations until the Recording field issue is fixed (I don't want to redo any work I've done :P).

Take care :D ~ jujimufu 19:52, 13 September 2007 (EDT)

I'll look at the two discussions :) --Feldmahler 20:07, 13 September 2007 (EDT)
Ok, thanks :) Thanks for the quick replies too :D ~ jujimufu 21:51, 13 September 2007 (EDT)

US Server submission woes

Feldmahler, can something be done about the US server upload script? It is highly annoying to have to change file names around to appease the script every time a submission must be made. And furthermore, could a system be worked out so that if a piece is created with the work-1923 template that the user could pick the actual file they want to submit (instead of the placeholder file) and through the submission process a folder with the composer's name will automatically be created on the US server and the file placed within? What can we do here to make this not seem such a jerry-rigged operation? Daphnis 00:35, 16 September 2007 (EDT)

Well... the reason it is like it is currently is two-fold. Regarding the file name, the problem is partly with the web server software, which is out of my control for the US server. If I had allowed some filenames (namely those with multiple periods in them), it would be very easy for anyone to take over the server (or at least the IMSLP portion of the server) by uploading a malicious file with a crafted filename, unless sufficient sanitization has been performed on the filename (like what the wiki does). Of course the fun ends when the server gets taken over ;) On the other hand, I could theoretically code the sanitization procedures, but the problem is that as it is I'm already coding approximately 2-3 hours per day, and this is rather low on my list of to-dos for a few reasons.
The reason why the US server submission procedure seems jerry-rigged is also due to the fact that the file cannot touch the Canadian server in the first place. This is why I cannot code something which uploads the file to the Canadian server and then moves it to the corresponding folder in the US server (as you suggested; there is unfortunately no way to make files on one form upload to another server), because that would be illegal. Therefore the file has to be uploaded directly to the US server. What I could do is allow people to upload directly to the composer folders; the reason I have not done this yet is because I was afraid of not being able to keep track of what was uploaded, since the US server does not have wiki-like history logs. However, this may be easier to work around, so direct uploading to the composer folders on the US server may come soon. Folder creation would be harder, though.
I've been planning on a complete remake of the US server for some time, by basically renaming all files to their IMSLP number. This way there would be no folders, and people can simply enter the IMSLP # of the file they want to download, and then download the file. This would make uploading easier too (no need to rename files). But again this would require a fair amount of coding, and it would be impossible for me at the moment because as I said above I'm already coding 2-3 hours per day on more urgent stuff (currently working on upgrading the wiki before the support period for the current version ends next month).
All in all, the reason the US server has not received as much attention is because: 1. its use is comparatively infrequent, 2. I'm rather busy coding other stuff, and 3. the use of the US server should decrease throughout time, eventually disappearing altogether in a decade or so :) Until then, I'll try to do what I can, but I'm really rather short on time currently (already coding, and I have my Masters application due in December), so probably cannot do much for the time being. I'm however open to suggestions and even code if anyone is willing to donate some... --Feldmahler 23:59, 16 September 2007 (EDT)

Yes, I know I know...It's a large pain in the ass and comparatively unimportant, or as you say much lower on the list. Just thought I would find out exactly the circumstances. Keep up the work on the more important stuff in the time being! Daphnis 00:11, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

Favicon

I just remember, what happened to the favicon after all? Are we going to change it to the new one or are we keeping the current one? ~ jujimufu 08:27, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi Jujimufu! Sorry about this! The reason that the favicon hasn't changed yet is because I tried a while ago, but could not convert .PNG to .ICO successfully on Linux (I've tried a few ways, but they all end up corrupting the image) :/ I used to have Windows (under which this would have been easy), but I don't anymore. Would it be possible for you to use Paint to convert the .PNG to .ICO and e-mail it to me at imslp@imslp.org ? If not I'll continue to look for a way to convert under Linux. --Feldmahler 10:16, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi Feldmahler, I've mailed you one that I've made (on my Linux machine) with pngtoico. In Konqueror it looks all right. --Leonard Vertighel 13:23, 21 September 2007 (EDT)

Thank you Leonard! :) I will put it out in the near future, perhaps with the 1.11 release. I've already finished coding the upgrade (with lots of code reorganization and a few important features) on the off-site testing server, but still need to run many tests so that I don't break it horribly. Will probably upgrade the site proper at the end of this month or the beginning of the next :) --Feldmahler 16:01, 21 September 2007 (EDT)

names

Hi, since Hungarian is a logical language, Szervác is my family name & Attila is my given name :-)

So under .org I'm using this correct form: SZERVÁC Attila :-)

source code

Hi, How can I upload Lilypond source code?? Zip was rejected

Lilypond source code is not accepted at the moment; this is due to the lack of an user-friendly editing environment (and thus the hardness of anyone who is trying to casually view it). Only Finale and Sibelius files are accepted, and both have free score viewers. The ZIP file type has been deprecated due to security issues; the only allowed file types are PDF, MUS and SIB. I would recommend submitting a PDF convert of the Lilypond file :) --Feldmahler 19:54, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
IMHO Lilypond has user-friendly editing environment, but anyway: Lilypond files are small, and there are no security issues with it. Because of my free license, I MUST release the source code (allowed in Mutopia, WIMA & many important sites), so, of course You are the Leader, but I think, there are no strong reason denying Lilypond source files. Due to security issues I can't use Finale/Sibelius & can't encourage others to use it. Are there free, open-source viewers for Finale or Sibelius? I don't know that, but Lilypond is the most flexible de facto standard of free, modern & high-quality scoring (e.g. FollowVoice in Polimetry). So not-denying Lilypond source files would be a NICE, FREE FEATURE ! :-) not a bug for us, free composers & for the Free World. Please, please, consider it! :-)
I don't think CC licenses require source code release? *All* non-public domain files should be under one type of CC license or another. In any case, I know very well what you are talking about (I myself am an open source advocate), but this is not on high priority right now unfortunately. I'm already working on too many things at once (especially today), and I have to prioritize urgent changes (such as the upcoming upgrade). --Feldmahler 17:54, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Editing Generalinformation template

Hi, where can I edit this template? I can't find it. --Funper talk 10:30, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

You can no longer directly edit the template. You can find the old template here, but you really cannot modify it to any degree (the template also tells you why this is so). --Feldmahler 19:54, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
ok, i was mainly thinking of moving Recordings to the right since it fits better under "Discussion" rather than "Year of First Publication" :) --Funper, Stockholm, 2007. talk 20:03, 25 September 2007 (EDT)
Ah... Jujimufu asked me about the same thing :) Well, the reason is that the "Recording" field as is is rather hacky; I just threw it in there without much regard for how it looked. The reason for this is that it is very very easily changeable at any point, so I'm not extremely concerned about it. That said, Jujimufu has already suggested some changes, which I will try to put in after the upgrade, possibly along with the revamping of the add work/file special pages that I'm planning. --Feldmahler 20:21, 25 September 2007 (EDT)

Debussy's Fantaisie - remove file from server

Feld, I have erred in submitting a revised (thus still under copyright, at least I *think* so) reduction of the Fantaisie IMSLP #14376. I don't think this has made it to the US server yet, but if you could delete the file and the record under the work page. I got my hands on the original edition, which is PD and will submit it soon. Thanks. Daphnis 14:29, 27 September 2007 (EDT)

Done! :) --Feldmahler 22:24, 27 September 2007 (EDT)

Site ripping ban script very sensitive

Hi Feldmahler, the script is really sensitive! I wanted to add a new work page and clicked on the button. I waited about 15 s, nothing happend (slow connection?, IMSLP slow at that moment?), so I clicked 'Add' again several times (I must admit a bit rapidly...) and got the ban message. Is that necessary just because of some clicks? Well, since my provider uses dynamic IP, I disconnected and connected again, no problem :-) Hobbypianist 05:48, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi Hobbypianist! This is an issue that I'm going to address with the upgrade :) IMSLP has been slow recently sometimes (especially on editing; viewing should be fine) due to the increase in traffic... upgrading the server is on the agenda, and will be done in 2-3 months :) --Feldmahler 09:14, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Copyright review

will those who have been around for awhile (doing reviewing) be needed to do tests? --Funper talk 22:58, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

No, but I'm currently busy fixing a few broken places, which is why I haven't assigned the groups yet :) I tested the thing for 3 days but I guess the upgrade is just too big... good thing the broken places aren't extremely major. --Feldmahler 23:03, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

Duplicate IMSLP numbers

You still need? --Leonard Vertighel 14:02, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

And Scroller?

Don't think either is necessary :) --Feldmahler 14:09, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

work pages with no scores but with textual content

What do you suggest we do with pages like Piano Quartet in A minor (Mahler, Gustav)? Leave as is? Or move the text somewhere else? --Leonard Vertighel 15:40, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

I'd just leave them... there shouldn't be too many of them anyway :) --Feldmahler 16:28, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Internationalization: french

Hi,
I noticed that the french versions of the essential pages (as listed in the Internationalization section) are either inexistent or outdated. I recently introduced a french version of the "public domain" page. It wouldn't be a problem for me do so for other pages (including eg. Main page) in a reasonable timeframe. User Coulon is in charge of this task, but if he needs some help I would be happy to contribute on that point.
Best regards
Matthieu 09:11, 1 October 2007 (EDT)Matthieu

Actually, go ahead and translate :) I'll give you translator status when you finish updating the main page. Coulon was the one who started the translation, but he is by no means the one in charge of the french translation: everyone is welcomed to translate and improve upon it :) --Feldmahler 11:19, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
How does one get a "translator status"? I mean, I've translated the whole website into Greek, I could use one :P ~ jujimufu 16:19, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
You already have translator status Jujimufu ;) You'll know how to use it after I finish this page. --Feldmahler 16:58, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

Ok, it's done for the main page ! Unfortunately some pieces (the left vertical part in particular) seem impossible to modify for me (for the moment it's a strange mixture between english and french). If you have priorities for translations, feel free to ask. Otherwise I will continue with the other items mentionned in the Internationalization section (namely Score submission guidelines, Score submission guide, IMSLP goals and Help page). Matthieu 17:23, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

Do you mean the sidebar or the left half of the main page? There is a way to translate both, but I have to write out the procedure first :) In the meanwhile you can continue translating normal pages, and I'll give you translator status right now. --Feldmahler 17:27, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

Yes, exactly. But my concern was aesthetic indeed ... I mean there is no hurry in my opinion if to have to write code to make it possible to modify ! Regards, Matthieu 17:55, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
