The Swimming Pool was inspired by the mural of the same name by Henri Matisse. Later in his life Matisse suffered from arthritis and thus engaged in a new form of expression through colored paper cutouts. This mode of creativity included his highly acclaimed book Jazz and the mural discussed here. In response to the playfulness of the work, the composer traced some of the shapes of the mural from photographs and created melodies that were orchestrated for wind ensemble. In 2003, the work won the prestigious international Swan Composer Prize and was premiered by the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble, Craig Kirchhoff, Music Director.
