Composition and first performance dates from Chandos 9742 and Tudor 7032.
This trio was originally intended to be the finale of the Piano Trio, Op.1 No.3. In this form it was performed in 1841, when Liszt adviced Franck to dismiss this movement because of its length and make it a separate composition.
