Loosely entitled Marches, simply because at the outset that is what they were intended to be, but the composer was unable to maintain a strict walking pace, so these 3 pieces rapidly outstripped their initial purpose. The third number is the longest, and lightest in style. The cover design alludes to another meaning of 'Marches' in French (=steps), and also to the necessity for a cathedral organist to climb an often treacherous winding staircase to reach the organ loft. Technically, the third piece can also be described as 'treacherous' whereas the first two pieces are more 'leisurely', number 1 being like a funeral march gone awry.
Numbers 1 & 2 have been 'transformed' (not transcribed) for piano solo by the composer as explained in the Preface, whereas number 3 is a regular transcription for piano duet.
