According to Grove Music, this was written for the Coronation of Edward VII, and later revised for use in the Coronation of George V. Grove doesn't give an instrumentation, though it often heard with organ and brass. The Hyperion recording notes (link above) says the introduction was completely rewritten for 1911.

Worldcat's sources give an estimate of 1902 (or 1903) for the publication date of "The form and order of service recommended for use in the churches of the Church of England throughout His Majesty's Empire on Thursday, 26th June, 1902, being the coronation day of their majesties King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.", the publication in which the first version of "I was glad" appeared.

  • According to the RCM catalog, the instrumentation of the manuscript MS 4256 (I was glad when they said (Edition "A") : 1902) is "Flutes (2), oboes (2), clarinets (2), bassoons (2), contra bassoon - horns (4), trumpets (4), trombones (3), tuba - harp - timpani - strings - organ - double chorus". - ES
