Misc. Notes Original Version of the aria as sung in the pasticcio version of Hasse's "Artaserse" in London during the season 1734/35. - Later the aria was extended by an opening instrumental ritornello and additonal melismatic passages; in this form it was interpolated in various other operas, such as Pergolesi's "L'Olimpiade" and even the first Neapolitan performance of Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". - Source: "The Favourite Songs in the Opera call'd Artaxerxes", J. Walsh, London c. 1735. - Facsimile reprint: Arnaldo Forni, Bologna 1980.

  • Since Broschi's brother Carlo (aka Farinelli) sang arias by Porpora in Artaserse it is probable that it is the same pasticcio, though Grove Music dates Porpora's Artaserse at 1721. RISM also has links to Hasse and Ariosti for the 1734 production of Artaserse. It is difficult to tell whether this is two different productions or the same one.

Answer apparently: Artaserse was a co-production between at least two, perhaps all three of these composers. See Wikipedia article. - ES
