More or less identical (but shifted down by a fifth), I think, to the theme of the slow movement of the (in 1893 not yet rediscovered?) violin concerto in D minor WoO 23 (September-October 1853), but Schumann believed that he was hearing it for the first time when he wrote it down in 1854, as the story goes?... (indeed this theme- on which Schumann also began to write variations himself - his Geister-Variationen, 5 variations on this theme - WoO 24... - is mentioned in the Wikipedia article on the violin concerto.) - Schissel
